World Environment Day 2013

Kenya Fluorspar Company, in partnership with Kenya Forest Service, supplied tree seedlings to three schools during the World Environment Day 5th June, 2013; Theme “Think, Eat, Save: Reduce Your Foodprint.”

Trees serve as giant carbon sink, playing a critical role in climate change mitigation. Managed or primary forests sequester the most carbon (100–300 Mg C per hectare), and widespread agro forestry systems, which store around 50–75 Mg C/ha, can be powerful in the global climate change mitigation effort.

The planting activity was officiated by the Managing Director Mr. Nico Spangenberg at Kimwarer camp where 300 trees were planted before proceeding to 3 neighbouring the schools.

“There is need to devise means to co-exist with nature. With the growing population, there is huge pressure on the existing natural resources leading to their destruction. Knowledge is key to the success of environment related activities and its conservation. The Managing Director urged all to convey the information to the neighboring communities on the need conserve the environment.”

The exercise was later extended to 3 neighbouring Primary Schools namely Menone, Sesia and Chepsirei.  Each school received 1 000 tree seedlings which were planted during a ceremony.
