Taekwondo Facility
Kenya Fluorspar supported the building of an ultra-modern Taekwondo facility in 2012, at a cost of ~USD 150,000. The main goal of the project was to provide martial arts training to all surrounding public schools and local adults.
The opening of the Champion Taekwondo Dojo was a special event attended by hundreds of people in the community who were told by visiting former world champion taekwondo master Victor Luke, from Toronto, Canada: “Taekwondo was originally developed for soldiers to help them protect the people. But today real taekwondo is a martial art where youngsters develop the mental skills which give them discipline and self-respect.”
After the facility was commissioned in July 2012, 600+ students and adults received training per year, free of charge, at an annual cost of USD 80,000 to the Company. Fluorspar Primary School incorporated Taekwondo classes into its curriculum, with students receiving 4 classes per week. Hundreds of students graduated through different levels of the sport. In 2016, one of the largest black belt grading tests ever held was hosted at the facility, with 114 students participating.
